Chest of Colors forum

It's my birthday on the 25th of June and my Parents and my Mrs want to buy me something that I can enjoy so I suggested some model paints and brushes.

To that end I've been hunting about and reading lots of reviews on the different brands and have decided to go with the Vallejo Model Colour range of paints and their Sable Brushes so does anyone have any thoughts on why I shouldn't get the following

And if so what would you suggest I go for instead?

My Parents are spending ?25 on paint and my Mrs wants to spend up to ?10 on brushes as well as making me some sculpting tools (I'd like to make them myself but she's being obstinate and not letting me ) so I can have a go at sculpting my own models https://tinyurl.com/mgf3ce by the way that's a 1p piece in the picture for scale

I am sooooo looking forward to finally getting some good paint and brushed to make my painting a whole lot easier than it is at the moment!

strange thing about problems with posting...
as for paints I'd also consider vallejo game color instead of model color: from what I read VMC rub off the models much easier than VGC but that's just a tip
and if I had your choice I'd take paints but drop 2 of them and took a brush instead

What brush would you recommend?

fan of winsor newtons or a brush called American painters which can be found here. Found that they can get as detailed but little less in quality. (but can afford to replace regularly.) Though no easy acess to paint supply store here so I buy brushes on-line.

CP - Vallejo model colour series is not very resistant to rubbing off. If you want to use your minis for gaming, I'd recommend other paints.
Your overall plan sounds good - some paints, some brushes. Don't worry so much about the exact brand, just try new stuff and see if they suit you and your style of painting.

Heh spoilt for choice there CP , i still need to sort out some paints for you actually. But i would always recommend brushes from your local store that way you always have an easy supply of them and you can check the quality is there in person before you buy. That's what i do anyway

I ain't an expert but have heard the exchange of opinions between Ana, Illusionrip, and also other painters, who said that they are less and less satisfied with W&N brushes these days, as the quality seems to be lower than before.

Raphael 8400 series brushes are better in their opinion, and also other ranges are worth checking.
But if you haven't used W&N before, you should notice the difference between cheaper brushes and W&N anyway and will probably enjoy the change in favor of W&Ns.

Argh... so much choice so little options!

Looks like my choice is going to be limited by what's available on-line, I have no local art/model shops of any worth so I think I'll just go ahead with the Vallejo Sable Brushes and the Game Colour Paints for now.

At least it'll give me something to be playing with for now and I can work on my technique and style instead of fighting the paint like I am currently.
