scottjames' WIPs

Post by scottjames »

So here is my first WIP. These are actually not final photos and I am going to bed to sleep now before tidying up some final things with this mini tomorrow.

I found painting this mini painful. I have forced myself out of my comfort zone to do things I know I need to start doing, but have not been doing. Examples are, highlighting UP! to white! trying to improve my blending, trying to do NMM (Ack! I cant! I dont know how to make it look shiny without metal paints!?).

Things I dont like: the glove. the tubules I sculpted on his back.
Things I like: I got more contrast in this mini than my previous stuff, and I liked my first (subtle) attempt at OSL. =)

Anyway, what do you like and what do you not like? Thanks for your critique! (I am looking forward to painting my first ever PP model next, I found a shop nearby that sells it all.!)

Its a good solid effort, one thing i have found with NMM is that you want to show alot more darker shaded areas then you actually realise, and small but sharper light coloured transitions to make it really work. I hope that helps a bit. The tubules on his back are appropriately nurgle to me so i don't see too much of a problem with them except again you might want to shade them a bit more to help define the features. The skulls looked very bleached out to me, maybe add a hint of a brown or something to give them a smoother colour transition. I really like the armour how it's a strange brown/green/tan colour.

Thanks for the feedback. He's all done now, and the final photos aren't very different so I wont take up any more space with posting them. I've just been collecting lots of images from online that show various metals painted really well, so I have plenty of reference for the next time I try NMM. :)

I think tubules *belong* on him, as he is Nurgle.. I just don't think they're sculpted very well, but I'm a newb so :p

Thanks for looking. I'll post something IN PROGRESS next time. lol !

as arctica wrote it's a piece of solid paintjob although some elements could be improved :)
I really like pale/rotten color of armour especially on legs - black shoulder pad looks simply flat and boring compared to rest of armour; I also think original back pack would look better than tubes otoh it's nurgle so everything is possible here

not only the blue is the most distracting but also quality-wise it lets the model down the most.

except for this part I really like this paintjob, even though the NMM doesn't look much like NMM but more like metallic paints covered with too flat varnish.
if you want NMM I recommend going for deeper contrasts, just like Arctica said...
