Khorne Lord WIP - possibly GD entry
Ok guys, most of the other pics I have been posting are mainly for my tabletop gaming army and as such I haven't been going insane on the detailing too much. However, I have been thinking of taking my Juggernaut Lord to enter into the GD and as such I would like some honest advice on this model. I have not started the mount yet, just this guy. I think he is mostly done but as this is the place for great advice....

This is a very good paintjob, but as soon as we saw it with Ana we both had the same feeling about it: while the sculpt is very detailed, the paintjob doesn't seem to replicate it. What I mean is that the paintjob looks (at least on the photos we can see) underdetailed - edges should be a bit picked out to make sharp edges better visible. It really makes models look better - even if you only do it to the edges on which light would fall.
The surface on the shield looks too flat and empty to me. Maybe some decolorations on it, slight variations of colors on some parts to make it look a bit older and worn, definitely some scratches - just see Kacpero's version of Lysander and how much did it add to otherwise flat surfaces of his armor. The helmet is very flat - nothing's going on on the central part which is his head. The 'ears' with glowing effect are very good, that's true. But it's not enough to make it a GD winner for me. Metals and armor seem to be too flat at the moment.
I know that's quite some comments, suggestions and criticism, but for a GD entry it's really good to get it before the judges get to see your entry.

I second the Mahon's comment.
darklining, deeper shadows, stronger highlights - make all parts of a mini pop out.
are those 'lava' horns the main element? by using that effect in one place only you made them look so. repeat the effect somewhere on the mini.
highlight eyes, add white dot (light reflection).
pay some more attention to the axe's handle.

nothing more constructive left to add
I'd like to see some more "lava" elements on the model - you paint it damn well!

Might want to try and differentiate a bit more between the cloak and the leather, the ruffles look too similar to the leather straps etc to me. But i concur with everything else that has been said. I think what i've read (since i've never enter the GD) a model has to be really unique in order to shine from the rest of the entries, that seems to entail some slight conversion work too, be it different poses or additions etc. Well at least thats what i think, but this should be the first time i enter the GD too.

Put the the same pattern you have on the head on the other red parts of the mini and you're going in the right way.
The gold/bronze needs some more work as now it looks a bit flat, so a bit more shading and some finely place highlights would take the flatness away.
I have the same model and I think it's one of the best GW products that came out in the last few years. Your's is giving me inspiration to one day start mine so I'll be following this project closely!

The lava effect on the horns will be repeated on the Juggernaut itself. I am thinking of doing it in the cracks between the armour plates on the beast to make it look like it is glowing from within, possibly with a small touch of OSL to really make the effect stand out on the Jugger.are those 'lava' horns the main element? by using that effect in one place only you made them look so. repeat the effect somewhere on the mini.
Keeping in mind that I would like to keep the black colour for the central part of the helmet, what would you suggest for this? There are some greys there to highlight but they didn't come out in the pic at all (too dark maybe). I was also thinking of giving the eyes a slight bit of OSL to give them a glowing effect, would that help? The helmet is very flat - nothing's going on on the central part which is his head
What would you suggest for this Arctica?Might want to try and differentiate a bit more between the cloak and the leather, the ruffles look too similar to the leather straps etc to me
Seems like the biggest advice going on here is to add some more highlights to the metals, especially on the edges, give the shield a bit of battle damage, and to make sure that I use the lava effect elsewhere on the model. Also while I am thinking about it Arctica's comment about the cloak got me to looking at it and I realized that I have to darken up the undersides of the folds a bit more to show the lighting a bit better. Oh and Skrit, 100% total agreement here. This model is simply fantastic and is literally the reason I started up a Warriors of Chaos army to begin with. This and the knights.

Wraith I love this figure and your work one him really makes me have to go out and buy it just because of your figure! If it hasn't been said yet, I really think the leather could look a little more worn too, made to look more dried out with a more stark contrast on the edges? Good luck on him, can't wait to see him finished!!
