Hello all,

I am starting up a new High elf army and really want to push my painting limits with this army. I have begun to try glazing for highlights which has worked out ok so far(still need LOTS of practice, but I'm a work in progress).

Anyhoo, I've found some source material for the type of skin tone I would like to use and I am wondering if some of the amazing painters that come to this site could maybe help me figure out how to pull it off. Heres the link....

Its got a purpleish, greyish, hue to it, but still kind of looks like flesh. I am trying to paint a very "dark" High Elf army as pose to the bright and shiny ones that most people paint(not that there is anything wrong with them).

My robes and tabbards a are very dark red and creamy biege kind of color, with muted silver and gold armour, like the pic in the link, but darker and more muted.

Any help would be greatly appreicated.

what you basically want is complex effect using simple techniques. Sorry, there are no shortcuts here

The flesh looks almost undead to me... just cleaner I do think it's a difficult skintype to make look good. It's easy to go wrong as it's very pale but you need colors to make it look 'alive'.
Try a few mixes first and then work your way up from there.

I would try something like a mix of light grey + a light flesh color (and maybe a touch of blue depending on the type of grey you use)
Highlights by adding something like VMC Deck Tan and eventually an offwhite to the basecolor. Shading basecolor + a slightly darker fleshtone + touch of blue or purple maybe.
You could also try to add a darker grey + some color for the shading, but be carefull not to make it look like stone. You need to offset it a bit with a different color. (that's why the flesh tones and blue or purple are there)

It's all practice and experience though. Tutorials can guide you but won't make your mini look excellent right away.

So start experimenting till you got what you want And don't forget to show us!!
