creating forest terrain piece

How to convert or sculpt a miniature? How to make a decent base or even a full diorama?!

creating forest terrain piece

Post by Demi_morgana »

some time ago (about 1,5 year ago iirc :roll: ) I got some cheap trees made for games in mini scale (mechwarrior, epic, cav); I didn't have any idea what to do with them until I got seriously interested in cav;
I want to make piece of forest so artillery has a place to hide in but I'm wondering about one thing: the base :think:
I want to place trees on rather flat base (cav models are rather short after all) but I'm not sure what meterial would be the best: styrofoam (sturodur to be more specific) is light and easy to work on but rather fragile, sheet of cork seems to be more durable but I know sometimes cork starts bending especially when there's glue on it...

any ideas? Eljot? :razz:

Broken or old CD's + trees + sand and polyfiller (gapfiller) is what my friends and I used.

PVC sheet? they can be as thick/flat as you want them to be, you can cut/phase edges so that base looks more natural, and make small holes to stick trees in it.

thanks for the tips guys,
CD is too small for 30 trees but PVC should to the job! I have piece of pvc but it's about 5mm thick :(
I think I'll drop in advert agency and as them if they don't have some pvc for devoted modeller :wink:

ok, here are 2 pics: size of CAV models and wip of wood - it's crappy but if must be functional for gaming:

apc is almost 2cm high including the turret, trooper is ~1,2cm tall + the base

Either add bases to the APCs or mount infantry on thinner bases. The forest is a bit thin but better for gaming :)

Wanna play CAV?

I will base vehicles - there were no bases in blisters so i had to get molds and cast my own

I know it's thin - it looks more like a nursery than wood but there must be enough space for hex-bases :neutral:

I've always wanted to start playing game in such a small scale, I didn't manage to find anyone here to play epic so I hope I'll achieve success with CAV
