Hi! I'm trying to paint up some imperial fists (yellow) and failing miserably. I was hoping maybe I could get some advice for it. I'm going for a yellow color like the one in the Ana's gallery. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

What color are you priming? White is probably best for brighter colors, though Black will work. It'll just take more coats to cover smoothly.

I find that yellows (and reds) are both a pain. No matter what brand of paint you are using, they don't cover well. Best you can do is keep your paint nice and thin, and lay down three or four coats. Its really important to let the first coat dry throughly before going on to another coat.

On the upside, highlighting yellow is usually pretty easy (just mixing in white).

I've a whole Imp fists army too. I'm going to give you my way of painting yellow. Well, not my way but the way I did it. I used to ask for a lot of advice on yellow too

My way:

- white undercoat
- wash with a watery mix of yellow ink + flesh wash + a drop of dishwash product (or a glaze medium) The soap is for the pigments to settle in the recesses. and the wash will act as a guide coat and as shading.
- the first layer of paint is yellow + a bit of white. The white will make the coverage of the yellow better.
-after the first layer is dry you can paint over with thinned pure yellow. This yellow will be easier to paint because you have a yellowish base now. And be sure to use thin layers to get a smooth coverage
-From here you can highlight further on with white or a lighter yellow.

Yes, white primer will be the easiest option if you're doing lots of yellow. I'd suggest base coating with an ochre brown or ochre yellow colour before layering yellow over most of the surface. The ochre would then serve both to enrich the yellow colour and to provide shadow.

It might be best to add that I don't use yellow that often, so maybe someone has more experience and better advice.

Definitly a white undercoat! I did it on black one once and let's just say that the mini ended up in the 'rather forget bin'!

The tips you gave sound good ToMaZ and Ritual! If I ever paint yellow again I'll try them out!
