How to paint fantasy miniatures by Andrea

ok I bought this book a while ago because there's the chance to learn from the best...and oh boy! It was not cheap...it was 27 Euro with the shiping and everything (even though we divided the shipping among 6 people...) so that's a good 77cent per page that has information and not just stuff I can see on CMON for free anyway...All this I knew for a while, but now I found the time to sit down and read through the articles slowly, and I started with the two most interesting for me...

Now let's take a closer look at the information, e.g. the Face tutorial where they use the Andrea 54mm Elf. First of all...what is a "veil" ...? It's no use to throw in vocuabulary that is probably translated 1:1 from Spanish and that noone else uses...my best guess is that "veil" means "wash with very very much dilluted color" but then again they use "veils" also for highlighting which makes me guess again "cotroled strokes of very very much dilluted color". I am not smarter than before, all I have is pretty pictures to look at...

and what is "Toasted Shadow" ...? with some reverse Engineering my best guess is that it is "Burnt Umber", however the number (VMC 941) doesn't apear in the list of colors at the end of the page...on the contrary we have "Hull Red" in that List which is not used at all...it is all really missleading...

Then - it's only really a minor thing but what if it happens at an important part of the text - they want to discribe how the hair was painted and talk about "the skin" after we just finished the skin...brrr...

Now the Tutorial about Robin Hood. The Shirt is basecoated in Komando Khaki+Vallejo Bone, ok. then let's do the shadows, of course we add some Blood Red to the Shadows of the shirt because the base color containes some green...rrrrrrrrrrigh...khaki...bone...where's the green again...? or do they mean...shadows CAST BY the shirt...I don't know...

I am only through these two so far and I already am disapointed :( The book is so promising with all the step by step pictures, but the text is a letdown. it reads like some steps are left out when you compare the text and the corresponding picture sometimes...

didn't know where to put this...

NONO! I'm not saying it's not worth it! the step by step pictures alone are really nice to see and also to read some thoughts on "why to paint this and that in this and that way"

but the points I mentioned above really made the whole thing a little hard to understand and like I said a few points I couldnt solve...

It's a pity to hear that the curse of online translating machines appeared also in books, especially in such a book...
Toasted Shadow sounds really funny, though :D

Anyone have it in the original Spanish? We might be able to answer some of Trov's questions if they do. I have plenty of access to native speakers to help.

Leaving translation issues aside, I quite like this book. I'm not an experienced or skilled painter, and I don't have contact with such painters (I2I contact, not via internet). So, I find this book very helpful.

Toasted Shadow was great! :lol:
But will Roasted Highlight be any worse? ;) Let's wait for volume 2 if it's ever released... ;)

My other suggestions:
Kommando Khaki -> Falschirmjaeger Olive
Bleached Bone -> Bleak Skeleton
any more? ;)
