Space Marine Chapter

Ok, well with my dwarven army nearing completion I am driving onwards to new projects to keep my paint brushes active. Namely a DIY Space Marine Chapter, I have some ideas and such I have been playing with and one rather strong possible theme but I have a number of problems.

One is, I suck at making up names. Ok, perhaps I should give details before muttering and grumbling.

Right my idea I am currently running with is; Egyptian. Now before you all start to say "But Thousand Sons are Egyptian", I say nay. The only thing that ties them into the Egyptian theme is a head dresses worn (were by Phaorohs), nothing else really screams Egyptian to me. This is where my chapter may differ. I want to incorperate lots and lots of Egyptian themes into the mix, I have a whole bunch of ideas and such plotted on paper (four sides of A4 in fact) these are all random ideas and comments, notes on noteable Egyptian gods and goddess.

But what I have no idea of are the following;

Chapter name - Have considered 'Sons of___' but the Sons of Horus seems too similar (that being said Sons of Ra sounds cool).

Colours - I am yet to look into Egyptian colours and such but I need to figure how to paint the chapter. Ideas?

Bases - Sand, they will be from a desert world. But how to make them look well, good. I do have the idea of placing the odd scarab on the base (not the Necron ones).

Conversions - Here I suck but I want to build this army to be heavily personallised. Ideas of possibilities would be nice.

Well this is all I can think of for now so any help is welcome. If you want to see my ideas so far I can scan my scribblings, though they are in pencil and written scruffily so may be rather ineligable to most.

Oh and the chapter will be built slowly, about 500pts a time and will be make to coinside with a new FB army (no details on that, secret. ;) ). Also before this starts I have a few other single miniatures I want to paint up, none GW too.

Thank you for any thoughts or comments you can throw my way.

I ran around with an egyptian themed SM army for a while too :)
This is what I came up with before getting tired of them:

- Using an egyptian god for names: Set, Ra, Isis, Ptah, Osiris, Anubis, Sehkmet, etc...; (there are DOZENS of egyptian gods)

- SM sign: an Ankh, a scarab, some sort of hieroglyph

- Using Tomb King parts in conversions, adding gems.

- Colors, a sandy color combined with turquoise, gold, red. (for the expensive gems etc)

- Bases, desert rock bases. Keeping in mind that you can add water (Nile) and thus vegetation too. You can check the brushthralls site on this.

That's what I wanted to do. Hope it helps a bit :)

Go for Heirs instead of Sons - is short enough and sounds cool ;)

"Heirs of Horus" :P

agreed: transforming ushabtis into terminators would be really original idea... and eye-catching for sure!
and about color scheme: pre-heresy thousand sons are fine, You find them in one of horus heresy albums :)

I immediatly thought of a sandy brown/yellow too with blue or turquoise trims...

Why not call them Children of Ra or something similar.

Thank you all for the ideas and comments, seems Egypt is a well known thing among those here. ^_^

I need to gather some more information and such before planning or painting anything but the stuff here has added a great amount of extra thoughts to my notes.

Oh on a name, how is Scions of Ra ? Or Heirs of Ra ?

You could go for Ra's Revengers. As according to egyptian history, Ra wanted to get revenge on Set for killing Osiris.
You could change this with Ra's revengers, going after the traitors, for (almost) killing the emperor :)

Just a thought

why not something like sons of Anubis, then you could incorporate some space wolf models. (anubis is an egyptian god taking the form of a dog walking on two legs
