need paint removal help

I don't know if anyone here can help me, but I thought I'd ask.
I have a doll that a friend brought me to get some paint off. The doll has "fairy wings" made from a fine, mesh material (soft, very pliable) that has gold edging painted on it.
The trouble is there are a few spots of white and green paint on the wings from when her little girl's room was painted recently.
I'm a little afraid to try many chemical paint removers since the wings are of a delicate material. She tried soap and water, but it didn't help at all. (It didn't make it worse, so that is good. )
I believe (but am not certain) that it is acrylic wall paint. But it seems fairly thick and almost rubbery to the touch.
Any ideas? (short of cutting the wings off?)
