really? Does anybody really consider these vespids *mighty fine* miniatures? I haven't read anything as untrue as this for a long time!

It's true that GW says that about all their releases. I still don't like the Vespid but found out that once you cut off some parts they look a bit better!;)
@Demi: True because they're in the latest installment of the Lotr range namely Shadows in the East. They're pretty nasty too!;)

1. Every company (not only miniatures manufacturers) says that about own products
2. You're actually right. If you cut enough parts, you'll have quite nice plastic base. If you like round bases, of course

Well, we can discuss about vocabulary, that shall be used. However - praising own products is one of basic principles of economic. It doesn't matter if you're right or not saying that your product is the best available.
Do you suppose them to state: yes, we have just released one of ugliest sculpts in our history ?

And I would like to have their worst sculpts in their history
I understand the marketing idea behind this praising, but you know, when you're advertising something you should stress the good points, and maybe remain silent about the weaknesses. They could call them the most bizzarre or weird, the most innovative, or think about something else.
Why do people laugh at these TV shopping adverts, where the present excellent, new, and miraculous stuff to keep you thin or fit, pens which can make holes in cans, or other strange items? Because it's not credible, because people don't believe it...
OTOH if they stay on the market, the advertisement must be successful in reaching its target audience - the more gullible and naive folks. I just don't like to be fed rubbish.
Don't sell Rolls Royce as a cheap car, because most people will laugh at you. Don't sell vespids as 'mighty fine' miniatures because whoever has eyes will be able to see this cheap marketing slogan through...
And back to topic - I think that the vespids are their one huge step back to the plastic miniatures from the time of the 2nd edition of 40K or these plastic dwarfs from the 4th edition of WFB ('barrels')... Terrible...

"- HEY FELLAS NIDS ARE NOT BUGS ANYMORE!!!! THEY ARE SPACE DINOSAURS!!! WE HAVE BEEN FOOLING YOU FOR DECADES"
then they release metal crap and call it vespid...
best thing about those sculpts is the feet rest for trash bin

I think it does. You are simply disappointed that what you have been converting was not real bugs
