Exactly. I tend to use digital backgrounds if for some reason I cannot use a real one (eg. I have none available, the size of my backgrounds is wrong, etc.) but working with a real one is so much easier!

If you have good reason to do that, you will pay more attention by preparing the real printed background than playing with the picture in photosop with unsure result. I am pretty familiar with photoshop for years, but now I think it's waste of time to do the photos digital way... Even this Urmuth with themed background was photographed on real printed bg - and the result looks natural and is better than any of digital compositions...

Well, nothing bad can be said about your photography or photo-editing skills. You're definitely a pro in this field.
Yet sometimes I had to take photos while being away from most of my stuff, backgrounds, setups, etc. All you get is a blank flat card or two and you have to do more about it later.
As I said - I prefer real backgrounds because cutting miniatures from backgrounds and pasting digital backgrounds is a lot of work which can be easily avoided. And usually with much better results...

I'll give the thing a try - hope my laserjet will be able to do the right job with printing

You've seen mine. No secret there. I can even draw it with text:
WINDOW ---> CAMERA ON TRIPOD ---> MINIATURE ON SOME KIND OF PLINTH (usually over 20cm from the camera) ---> BACKGROUND (usually some 5-20 cm behind the mini, depending on its size)
Hate to use artificial light and avoid it whenever I can...
Sometimes I need to screen sides or foreground to avoid color casts.

I used something exactly like this on the last Bazyliszek we've been to. The only difference is that I didn't have any printed background with me...

OK, I'll send it to you from home. Don't worry, my backgrounds are printed on inkjet printer too and it's fine...
