Arcane Miniatures Painting Competition
Re: Arcane Miniatures Painting Competition
Mine was Moby Dugg.
To be honest I am totally disappointed with the 1st place.
Li Tsu Tsin, is basically a copy of the studio job with a little bit of freehand added.
Thought Conrad's should have won to be honest.
I dint place, but then I didnt think I would before I even put brush to mini.

Re: Arcane Miniatures Painting Competition
congrats for honourable mention
But, calling Bren's work "copy of the studio job" is not justified. Here's a studio version:

sorry, but using red for dress is not copying a scheme/paintjob.
I can't agree with you on this one. I mean - ofcourse, you can feel that other works were better. I won't argue with your judgment of painting quality etc.atacam wrote:Li Tsu Tsin, is basically a copy of the studio job with a little bit of freehand added.

Its a bit more than the dress to be honest. At the end of the day, its only my opinion, and It is Russ' opinion that mattered on the day.
I am not taking away her paint ability, that is evident to see
I am not saying mine should have won, at the end of the day both 1st and 2nd place were much better, but I took a long time making sure mine wasn't a copy of the studio job.
That said as I have said it wasn't my choice.

I know you're not questioning judgment. I have no problems with the fact that your personal opinion differs from mine or anyone else.
I'm only surprised that you consider Bren's work a copy. nothing more, nothing less.

It's just one of the things that bother me about competitions, thats all. I am speaking from an informed position though. I have all the immortals and have not touched them, as I have struggled massively trying to figure out a paint job that is not like the studio job.Nameless wrote:I know you're not questioning judgment. BTW the other thing, is people entering the same mini(s) into multiple competitions. I would rather not enter than re-enter a mini painted for something else.

Re: Arcane Miniatures Painting Competition
I think this is quite an interesting discussion, I'm glad I wasn't one of the judges (and I don't think I'm able to say anything useful since I just can't judge my own model so don't feel obliged to read any further
). I respect everybody's opinion and with other judges I might not have won, I wouldn't be upset about it. I've entered several competitions and I know how it goes, sometimes you feel you've got a big chance and you lose and sometimes it's the other way around. All I know is I painted a model in maybe not so original colors, but for me that was no reason to not paint her. To be honest I didn't make a big study of the studio paintjob, I remembered she had a red dress and I thought it fitted well. With her being asian the skin and hair is also quite obvious, but I tried to give her a warmer skintone and overall a warmer look with more golden tones. I do get the point about trying to find a more original color scheme and usually I like that, however somehow that didn't happen on this model. But after all, I did paint the model and it's not like I copy-drybrushed the original paintjob... so I don't think I need to feel guilty I won as well. But for next time, I'll try to think about a more original color scheme, I'm glad somebody reminds me to be (and stay) creative

but not about the hair:
Click to see full-sized imageno, you don't need to feel like that. you won, the judges decided you deserved it, you should be happy and proud. that's my take.Bren wrote:so I don't think I need to feel guilty I won as well.
Re: Arcane Miniatures Painting Competition
This I do agree with. on the day the judge(s) decided they liked yours the best, that I wont dispute. As I have said she is very well painted.mahon wrote:no, you don't need to feel like that. you won, the judges decided you deserved it, you should be happy and proud. that's my take.Bren wrote:so I don't think I need to feel guilty I won as well.
Now get spending and show us some more stuff.

I don't really have time for another forum but I just wanted to pop by and congratulate Bren on the winning entry and the others who entered.
I look forward to having a good look at the dragon freehand on the back.
