Not when you consider the fact that they used to cover each others bodies in Olive Oil before a battle so that the enemies swords would slip off them instead of cutting into their flesh

Actually it's to defend against glancing blows not cutting ones however I do agree it does sound silly but I swear it's true
(not that I've tried it out you understand)
