Re: Tomaz's WIP's
Good luck with the news start, I'll be watching this thread with a great deal of interest.ToMaZ wrote:WIP update after more than a year...![]()
Early WIP Varghar from Rackham. I'm trying to get back to my old level or even improve that. But my painting is a bit rusty![]()
"Going back to my old level" haha you make that sound so easy. But of course we both know this isn't the case. The only way to get back there is to practice a lot.
The model looks great so far. I have the impression that the left shoulder has a slightly different color than the right one. This could be the picture though...

Re: Tomaz's WIP's
Thanks all for the comments!
I will work in some stronger highlights or maybe deeper shading.
With skintones I usually basecoat, shade with a few colours, then start highlighting. Once I've done all the skin, I apply final highlights and work in some more shading and maybe even colour if I think it needs it.

No you're right. The lower shoulder is basecoated and shaded a bit. The other one is highlighted. When I do large surfaces of the same type, I always divide my mini in sections. Then I finish one part to a certain point and move on to the next. It keeps me focussed.Corvus wrote:I have the impression that the left shoulder has a slightly different color than the right one. So true. Even some of my favourite techniques are causing me trouble. It's kinda frustrating, but I know I can't expect to get my blends as smooth as I used to, but I can at least tryCorvus wrote:Going back to my old level" haha you make that sound so easy. ...and that's what I thought. I guessed you must be working in sections. The tights and gloves will surely be repainted tooNo you're right. The lower shoulder is basecoated and shaded a bit. The other one is highlighted.

Re: Tomaz's WIP's
In the past few years I've developed some new techniques, but some older ones aren't as good as they used to be 3-4 years ago. Every time I start painting again after a hiatus I'm surprised how quickly this can dwindle.ToMaZ wrote: So true. Even some of my favourite techniques are causing me trouble. ... and then you reach the point when you accept the fact your skills are not what they used to be. and then you can start enjoying the hobby again, just forget about the pressure

yeah, you're at the 'enjoying the hobby again' point for sureToMaZ wrote:fashion changes so fast. Got to keep up with the trend

Re: Tomaz's WIP's
Had to put the wolf aside for a bit as a problem with his skintone was driving me completely nuts and I started on something a bit easier.

I didn't really want to put pics up just yet, but I needed to look at it from a different perspective as I wasn't sure about the colours.
Basically, the skin on the legs is done. The arms I messed up and need to be corrected. The highlights/shading didn't turn out right and I wasn't carefull enough while painting surrounding areas (you can see some dots on the inside of one arm) I thought that the green/blue tabard etc were good too, but when I look at the pic I think I need to add some more highlights. The cloth around here legs and arms will get a different colour. I think a darker brown to keep the natural tones theme.
Horns and skull are pretty much done too. Just need to add some texture to the horns and maybe smoothen the transition on the skull.
Everything else is basecoated.

Re: Tomaz's WIP's
ToMaZ, after what I've seen in the Warmachine news thread I am impressed with how good this sculpt is!
I like the skintone a lot. Reminds me of Inge's (a.k.a. Jenova) painting style but with deeper shading.
Looks good to me.
