why would it be sad?
it's sad that popular voting will have a significant impact on results, and as we know CMON voters tend to vote for popular minis/armies, not good paintjobs. So, I'm not bothered with specific name which will win the contest, whoever it will be, but with voting principles.
It's sad for me that American Idol and other TV shows started to have influence on this (my) hobby.

I don't think Natalya is necessarily going to win. Zach Lanier beat her in Baltimore in one category, and while Zach is very good, he's not the absolute best we've got. And she's never been against any of our historical painters, and some of them are as good as the Europeans. For a couple thousand or more in potential prizes, we may see some of them at this competition. I'm half expecting some of the European historical painters to show up, too. And that's when it turns into a whole different level of category in my opinion.

And she didn't automatically win at Gen Con either. Anyway, it is bringing in folks from all over who haven't been to this convention in years. Should make for a very interesting mix!

none of them has the fanbase, nor the "oh, i recognise that style" factor

Or maybe a pair of boobs on a DVD and CMON community drooling all over it.

Don't forget the French and Spanish guys are making plans to head over there too. I'm not sure if Natalia's work can match up with their's. But if only a few guys from abroad come over, she is surely the number one favorite.
Anyway I'm really looking forward to what is going to happen there.
