The 1st mini (purple)
The umbrella is really nice, and the purple parts are OK. It is not so with the pink parts (a stain in the very front of her chest?). I don't like the skin tone - doesn't look rotten or pale, sunbathed rather with strange shadows. A lot of white unpainted spots: see for example the line on her right breast.

The 2nd mini (red)
The red is cool with nice transitions. Totally different quality, althoufg some final highlights on the front would help to make it even more attractive. The umbrella, inner part, is not as good as the outer part. The skin tone is better, but the eyes are... strange. They are too bright, popping out from the face. Again, you have left a lot of unpainted spots, even on the dress!

The 3rd mini (blue)
You are making a constant progress :) Although the blue doesn't seem to be finished (neither shadows nor highlights), the dress is acceptably smooth and even. The white part of the dress is also OK. The skin is MUCH better, really, and the face is the best out of the three. It looks like a face this time :) And guess what - the white spots are gone :) Yous should work on this mini one more evening, do not forgetting about the fan, which is definitely not finished yet.

If you keep up improving your painting skills in this rate, we will see decently painted models in your gallery soon.

Thanks guys....and I do agree with you Marek.....unfortunately when painting for hours and you think you did ok....once a pic is taken...you start seeing the mistakes...especially those pesky white that were not covered by paint (no worries I will go back to them).

As for the turquoise/blue dress...never worked with this color before so found it a bit difficult to work with especially when trying to figure out the highlights and shadow color.

The eyes drove me crazy and the one with the red dress is definitely the one that shows. Fortunately one person provided me with a useful tip on doing eyes and the one in the blue dress shows. With that I will go back to the others and try to implement the same technique on them.

I really appreciate the comments you guys are providing me....I believe my painting and technique are steadily improving. Hopefully I can go back to enter into the GD in Baltimore next year or so (since GD Toronto is non-existent anymore :( ) and try to compare my work to others and get my self a Demon.

Thanks

If we find every mini better than the previous one - you're making visible progress. And what can be better than steady progress?

To give you something to think about I prepared such an example. It's a bit exaggerated, but it makes it easier to see what I mean.
Added some highlights with white and cream colors, and shading with dark blue and turquoise.

Mahon you are awesome!!!.....now can I have my mini back please :D

How did you do that....I'm assuming photoshop...but seriously that is a useful technique to have under one's belt.

But with all seriousness that is pretty helpful and made me a) see the difference in what can potentially be done and b) that I have got a long way to go to paint like that :banghead:. This is staying in my reference books for sure.

Now for the update...

Completed Seamus the gang leader.

He is the last of the models in the box set. The only thing needed is to complete the bases and provide you guys with a group shot of the whole gang.

Hope you like it.

And thanks all for the C&C that was provided through out this little project. All of them were of great help.

Next on the line.....Necromunda---House Escher Gang

Thanks

I don't think it's about having a long way to go. I think it's more about knowing which direction to take.
Currently I think you know what you need - just add more contrast. I just hoped to show you how good contrast can "sculpt" a miniature.

With this latest mini again i think as Mahon said you know which way you want to take it now, just have to keep going. More contrast on this one but the colours are relatively smooth other than the back of his coat, the tassely bits should be a bit brighter and in general i think it needs more highlights all over but im a stickler for super high contrast ;)

If you want to improve your skils, I would give you one more bit of advice:

Choose one thing to improve at the time and one only. When you see some improvement move on to another thing or keep improving this one.

For example:
- now I am trying to improve contrasts on this face.
- ok, I painted the face and it's better than before, so let's move on to some smoothness practice
- ok, I got this cloak smoother than before, but there's still something to learn so let's practise smoothness again on the sword
- etc.

Never try to learn too much at the same time.

You don't learn riding a bike and juggling at the same time. First one thing, then the other, and then combine them. ;)

Alright the Seamus Redchapel Gang are complete.

This overall experience was great and really enjoyed painting something different.

Hope you guys like them.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Looks good from the long distance shot. You might be shooting yourself in the foot by taking those other photos so close since a lot of the sculpt/paint imperfections can't be seen with the naked eye even though the camera is picking them up.

Only suggestion would be what Mahon said, try to get a bit more contrast with either deeper shadows and brighter highlights. Hard for me to recommend that since I still have problems doing it myself. :)
