I've taken a close look at the GD UK winners... what to say?

One one hand I can understand that some french-style painters are seriously pissed off, but on the other hand I think it's kind of cool that the traditional style of painting gets a chance.

Because that's what it is: another style of painting. Of course zenithal lighting looks more realistic, but since when should SF & Fantasy miniatures be realistic? In my opinion this hobby has had too many influences from the scale modelling hobby the past few years...

I don't agree with all the winners, but for example the rat ogre by Steve Buddle is technically perfect, why shouldn't this deserve to win?

I'm really looking forward to the judging at GD Germany, really curious what is going to happen there.

But I don't think they can pull this off at GD France

I've browsed through all winners and must say I'm really dissapointed.

Especially when looking at the second and third places, a certain mediocrity becomes clear. It's not so much a question of style or preference, but poor judging if you ask me.

Of course GW will prefer 'classic' or 'old' style miniatures for their UK GD, because it is still what most gamers look at, and this style of painting is preferred by 'gamers'. People who are more focused on the painting aspect of the hobby naturally start looking south towards Paris and Madrid because that is where the true artists present their works. I think germany is somewhere in between the two styles, and the USA is just far behind.
But the point I'm trying to make is that these winners get published in White Dwarf and are used to promote new releases. Many of the winning units and dio's are new releases, which has always been a ticket to succes at GD UK.

On the other hand, it doesn't bother me too much. The GD UK long ago lost its first place to GD France, Spain and things like euromilitaire etc. It is a shame though, because the painting styles on both sides of the channel could learn something from eachother (though I think that UK has more to learn from France then vice versa).
