to be honest, I'm not THAT impressed after seeing these good pics. Some amazing entries of course, no doubt about that. I'd probably place winners of many categories in different order, but that's just me :)
are playable gaming bases no longer a requirement?

... you know seeing them in person is quite different than seeing them on photos.

well, as far as I know they're more relaxed about it in France. I'd say it's the most 'artsy' GD of all GDs.
with GD UK being the most traditional, and thus - radiating this approach to Polish GD.

I'm fully aware of photo vs reality issues :) Just saying what I see and think, far away from criticizing judges for their decisions.
