ok, so I purely go to GDs to win something (meeting friends of course is a more than welcome addition!). It's not like I will die if I do not win something, but heck...I found something that I can be good in, it's fun to create those models, why not get your 2 minutes of "fame" for it additionally. There will always be jealous people that will try to put you down, heck I am jealous I cannot run the 100m in 9.6 or whatever the current world record is, but it's basically due to not training 5 hours a day for it.
The people that cry about being beaten by better painters usually don't even realise how much time goes into those miniatures and 100% of them isn't willing to go all the way, so they will never get better and win anything. still they wonder why their 10 hour entry in WHFB single didn't place again this year.

Agreed. I know I'm still years away from painting at that level, but I still enter anyway- I lose, and I'm okay with that. I do wish that GW had more local events, with more structure. Sort of a local>regional>state>national>international progression. There was a GW Conflict here in Minneapolis two years ago, and I did decently enough in their painting contest. Granted, there weren't a lot of entries. I had hoped to just be in the top three in one of the five categories I'd entered, and I got third place 40K squad and second place Lord of the Rings single figure. It was nice to compete against just a few people, including at least one previous GD winner, and actually win something. You can't always win the Superbowl, but it's nice to win a few games during the season.

As for banning certain people from winning- well, if a sports team is the best in the league, and wins the championship several years in a row, do they get banned? Of course not. I do, however, think that there should be a limit to how many GD competitions a painter can enter in any given year. I see nothing wrong with the same few painters winning every year, but it does get under my skin when the same few painters travel around and win in all of the competitions each year.

I guess IMHO I do not mind the top of the line painters entering in the competitions, but agree that there should be a limit to the number of GD's "Slayers" they can win in a single year here or abroad. I guess that I look at it on that I try my best with something I like and think may be different enough, then enter it in the appropriate class and hope for the best.

Anyway, just my tuppence worth.
