It's a logical step really, this way they draw in the gamer side of the hobby as well. Living on reputation isn't enough.

what do you need to sell a mini? either:
a) an awesome or at least appealing concept, that means a lot of brainpower and also know how in casting and what not before you can even get to producing the mini. you can probably only release a couple of minis per year like that. and theres always the potential for a crowd not receiving your last mini too well, resulting in a reputation drop or simply lack of sales for that mini, which you are depending on.
b) a game. you can create a faction, that has a certain style, that you can just keep on releasing minis into - after all that race demands that it looks like x, cause it belongs to the other x's. and then you have a lot of other factions of course, that you can just repeat this process on. after some innitial brain power investment you can just work within those boundaries. et voila, your productivity and potential for selling shit just multiplied ten- or twentyfold. people will buy the minis JUST because it belongs to my army, JUST because i need to collect them all, JUST because it has such an awesome performance ingame, JUST because.
