I only like CMON for the fact that there are some amazing and inspirational works gathered together on one site.

There are so many cool pics selected from the whole collection, that I don't even have to dig in the huge collection of pics there, unless I am looking for something. like a space marine terminator, or cool color schemes for a particular model. but you are right, it's still a #1 gallery in the internet and none of the others could ever come close to it.

unfortunately the scoring system is totally worthless and comments rarely provide any value.

The fact that CMON now focusses on business rather than hobby is their choice, but I can't really blame them. A lot of money is to be earned on CMON. Studios and painters look at CMON as a tool to promote their painting services, so I can understand Chern and Dave's choice to make money out of it too.

to me it all changed when they allowed to advertise auctions there. the gallery became a place to advertise commercial paintjobs and ceased to be the rating/feedback-receiving place it used to be

I can understand Mahon in the fact that a book is cool to look back at figs that will get lost or hard to find in this digital world. It's something that you can touch and hold... and maybe cherish?
For me though, the book doesn't hold any value. I think it's pretty useless.

It is absolutely useless! It's much easier to find the same pics in the internet, often in better quality!
But I like the 'tangible' aspect of the book, and the sentimental value, as the guys correctly named it...

I like reading books. I lost interest in the picture books somewhere after my toddler years

I'm not laughing at you. (Or anyone else for that matter)
I also look at the CMON pics of the day thread more often than I visit CMON. (thank you Nameless ) But often I just feel the need to compare a model that I'm painting to the same model done by different painters. And then I'm grateful that the CMON gallery exists, because there is no other place that you find such a large collection, that easily accessible.

I'm sure it will not be utterly useless for you, because if it was, why would you buy it? You said 'candy for one's vanity' or 'to remind you of what used to be'... so that's the use the book has for you I guess

I don't think the rating system on CMON is useless. I think you can still get a good feel of where you are at skill level wise. I still submit 95% of my stuff there, and I do think the score given is usually in the ballpark of where I thought it would be.

The book is still something I look forward to. I don't paint in front of my computer and it's nice to have a bunch of handy references available. Just this morning I was trying to deicde how to paint some light brown hair, flipped through the book and found something I liked and did my best to rip it off. I like having that handy and nearby. Also still look forward to having my stuff in their one day.

Like most of us I've seen CMON grow over the years. The only thing that bothers me is that the regular users on the forum have gone away and the cozy atmosphere of the old days has been replaced by noob and off topic talk.

But other than that I think the gallery is the best on the web. And the store is constantly growing: that can only be a good thing for us painters.

I understand that some people have problems with them making money off our miniatures. I don't really have a problem with that, that's why I agreed to have my miniature pictured in the book. They started the business in their garage so to speak, and now they're in a big warehouse with a big business. They must have worked very hard for that and I respect them for that.
