you should try a technic that is used in the custom paint industry to make snake scales by using fish net stockings for the texture.

Worked on one side for edge hightlights.
They're far from perfect, some are even gross (+ the wash on the right pipe that leaked on the green) but they'll do the trick.

pops out for sure but i think it was a bit too intense of an edge highlight imo.

I just think the highlight is too bright and the transition too abrupt on the edges, kinda makes it look very "tron"-ish
