Just think of it in categories of brainstorming: everybody throws their ideas in, the good ones and bad ones. Even if it's not useful for the painter in question, it may light a bulb in somebody else's head. Bear in mind there's nothing set in stone when talking about something as subjective as painting - the wider range of comments the easier it is to make something out of them and find the best route.
Of course it's just theory

GAH! These pics were taken on an old Canon "Elph" camera as the wife left the good camera out in the rain for a couple days. Sigh....



Anyway the mini was fun to practice blening on the robes on. I worked hard to get the shadow effect on the face with a lot of black brown. The pics make it look more stark than I'd like though. This mini's face was an odd one. I think the mini is meant to just have empty eye sockets. That was a first for me on a mini! Here it is anyway...

are shadows under the hood painted or created by lighting?

Maybe 50/50 lighting and paint. I took a lot of Black Brown and then straight black and spent a lot of time making the shadow effect but it's not as stark IRL and starts slightly higher up on the mini. It was impossible to get the light source exactly where I wanted it on the face without shooting the mini from a wierd looking angle below it's feet and pointing a little bit up. Gah!

A sober and minimalistic sculpt, and your painting really suits it!

I have only one comment: the oxidation on the base is a little bit overdone. Instead of treating every bolt with turquoise paint, only pick out a few. Oxidation is random, the way you did it makes it look too uniform in my opinion.

Corvus - Good point about the turquoise. I added too much just 'cause I wanted to add some colour to the mini somehwere. I think breaking up some of the bolts by leaving at least a couple with some other kind fo effect around the boltheads would have helped out as much, but looked better. Very good point! Thanks!

Still need to replace the camera my wife left in a weeks worth of storms! I am really happy with this one in the hand, the picks make the shadows look more stark then I did IRL, and the metal transitions are WAY more abrupt with the camera. Though I never really got too much of a hang photographing metals with my other decent camera anyway. Ah well, fire away if you like!
