I think you need to improve scuplted hair. They surelly add a lot to this mini, and I like the idea, yet for now they rather look like small tentacles, not hair.
I am no sculptor, I hope that you will receive advice in your hair-sculpting thread.

Damn, just made a whole lenghty reply and the site goes down!
What I said: (shorter version!)
Basically I agree with Phil about the hair, it looks quite unnatural. iirc Scibor explained how he does his hair, did you try that?
Other than that I really respect how you handle this project! I know from own experience that it is very time consuming and the drive you display is awesome!

and you didn't use the "select all" and "copy to cache" combo?

Realistic detailed hair is always going to be difficult for me, am not an experienced sculptor and am still striving to try and find the best way of sculpting in this scale. iv already lost a few days on the hair at the beginning of the week, i suppose i could make the strands even smaller but on the time frame iv got am going to have to call it a day, the hair is far from perfect, but its the best i can do at this moment in time, a bit naff but what can you do?

Iv tried Scibors method, its somethin id defo use on other minis, but the technique is quite 2D, it has detail one side but not the other and for this mini i need to have details on the underside as well as the top, dead easy technique like, remind me to thank him

Cheers kidda
mahon wrote:Now that's really excellent. The hair makes him look old and experienced. I would separate the strands into thinner ones by painting them in linear patterns.
Linear patterns? u mean highlight/shadow/highlight/shadow?
As for the base, well, if you don't want him placed in the open category, you should include the normal base even if you put it on a scenic display base or a plinth. It's best to make the base removable, because you never know how picky will your judges be. Usually nobody requires the base to be removable from the plinth, so they can be integrated. But if somebody decides to follow the rules strictly and not take the plinth into consideration (as display bases are not judged) and remove it - they can find a reason to disqualify you or put into a different category. Why take the risk?
On the other hand some judges have more relaxed approach and don't even require the 'gaming' bases to be added to the model as long as the plinth's size satisfies the size requirements.
I wouldn't take the risk anyway...
Like you said its not worth takin the risk, iv asked the plinth guy to drill a few extra holes to accommodate a base and magnet
small update
since am lookin to make quick day by day progress on this dude i thought id try and update me topic at the end of the night just to show how long certain bits take and get some feedback over nite on the stuff iv worked on

Some gems have been added to his belt, and the other side of the scroll work has been finished on his leg, still undecided whether to add any more details to his belt, want avoid unnecessary clutter

some more gems and scroll work, just got to work out wot am doing with the exhaust vents and the BP will be done!

i was a little fortunate when i was adding the scroll work on his gauntlet as his hand was loose and came off, then his arm followed, so iv take the chance to start tidying up the wrist armour and joint coz it was uneven, iv also tidied up the counter weight on the swords handle, still more work to do their.
Am having a bash at makin his fingers more talon like to help the theme, iv also removed the decoration about the sword hilt, will replace it with some kind of scroll work may extend some to the hilt as well

Of course I didn't!
I sometimes do it when I know the site has problems but the error didn't occur before that day, it waited patiently untill I wanted to do a large post!

and its turned out very shiny, shiny... not what i was thinking it was goin to look like and am not entirely sure i like it, i had the idea of the emps child being all gritty and realistic, then i kidda realised 2night iv never painted a realistic, gritty weathered mini lol
But wot can u do?
had a quick practise with the base and highlight colours yesterday...
