Yep, I think it can be a bit fragile for gaming models, but allows for cool effects on display models.
I'll post an example soon, but you can also make one with green stuff: make a flat sheet of greenstuff and put it on a few pens or pencils - it will hang from them and become nicely folded
you can also make a "form" from anything - like play-doh, clay or plasticine. Put the GS on it and watch it follow the shape nicely
Also do not forget cloth itself, paint with clothing paint, then varnish the heck out of it. That is one way to do it.
I think the thin metal is good way to go. Another idea is empty toothpaste tubes (clean with hot water).

You can also use thin paper, like tissues. Take some water glue or thin down a varnish, soak as amany layers of the paper as you need and after it dries a little bit form it in desired shape. Let it dry completely. You may add new layers any time afterwards, as needed. After you are done, cut the edges and prime it. It should be stiff and light at the same time, so no problem should be to attach it to a mini.
My toothpaste tubes are usually rolled up and crumpled to heck but I may have to try this myself on the next tube which I shall try to not crumple
Getting back into the thick (or rather thin as in thinning my paints) of it, not picked up a brush in some time so this may hurt a bit until I get used to the feel of them again
