Skulls must have mystical and religium meanings in the 40k universe - something like 'dust to dust, ashes to ashes' or
vanitas vanitatum....
or they just believe they look cool

It would be fitting since why wouldn't a sorcerer want to keep track of time? Time to your death anyway.
After that some sort of book would do.
Either way that is my opinion on this subject.
