Flintfish's WIP

Post by flintfish »

OK. time for a second attempt. For this I choose an old GW model already primed in my figure box. I think it's supposed to be John Little from Robin Hood

Hair and beard finished.

The priming is so-and-so (probably an almost empty rattle can or wrong distance those years ago) so I have to touch it up with paint as I go along. I think I have to find some way to make my desktop light shine less as well for these WIP. Didn't notice it until the camera was put away...

For the colors I am problably going with a green shirt, and brown trousers etc for that forest look.

I'd be tempted to clean that old paint off and re-prime myself, I'm currently struggling with getting my paints to a nice consistancy and I was told by many on here a good layer of primer is essential to a good finished paint job!

The Hair and beard look OK to start but could probably do with a bit more depth, maybe a few more highlights and then a dark wash to tone it all down again.

But then again my painting is worse than yours so I wouldn't listen to me that much
Getting back into the thick (or rather thin as in thinning my paints) of it, not picked up a brush in some time so this may hurt a bit until I get used to the feel of them again

Really difficult to say anything from that picture.

Some more work has been done, and hopefully it shows a little better...

I managed to get some of the shine off by diffusing the lamp with some cooking paper. A white background didn't hurt either... One day I might need to build a "photo box" for the painting desk, but first I need good stuff to show off :-)

I tried my hands (or rather brushes) on the staff and face, and I started working on the green tunic. I'm rather pleased with the eyes (not telling how long it took...), but the skin isn't as smooth as I want it. I borrowed some easy-flo from an artist mate, but the paint got a bit strange from it (it lost a lot more coverage with fewer drops of water). I'll experiment with changing the ratios in the water dropper, or just go back to water for the next painting session.

Until next time

The staff turns out nicely, a few highlights and it will be ready. The skin isn't finshed yet, though. Try to be a little more brave with the colors and make stronger shades and lights.

I will agree with Marek but will also add go deeper with the shadows as well. My battle cry (taught to me as well) is higher highlights and deeper shadows. Will feel like your going to far at first but does really make things pop.
If it wasn't for the gutter my mind would be homeless.

The mini is going well, just add some highlights on the face and some shadow and it'll be perfect ;)

really like how its looking! i especially like the wood grain and the eyes. the only thing i might try to fix is his left eye, from the picture it almost looks as though the white of his eye is leaking out of the inner corner. a tiny dot of black should fix it in a jiffy.

keep up the good work, shakes
