My Red Terror - Actually looks big enough to swallow a man

Post by Gareth »

Based on a Lotr metal model (thing the witch king rides, big winged beastie) and a plastic carnifex. Only original red terror parts are the tail end and the top of the head. The jaw is a carnifex.

The dry fit stage to see if it works...

It illustrates perfectly the concerns a lot of people were having regarding it being top heavy, but a slight repose, thicker tail and it partially submerged in water should really help make it look like it can support its weight.

This is the biggest green stuff project i've ever done, and i'm reasonably happy with my control of the substance. The key to projects like this is to hide the orginal parts and create one new unique model that gets people asking what parts that, and basically stream line them all together. And i think i've done that.

Also took on board typical tyranid evolution. The terror is in between a ravenor and a trygon in size and is capable of swallowing man sized creatures whole, so i instantly new the fex would be a good size.

I've trimmed off a lot of spikes off the arms to aid stream lining this tunneling nasty. I really thickened up the tail to head the lotr model, and i quite enjoyed working out how to do the belly vent flush with the skin. I just wanted the one as a tribute to the old red terror. I didn't want the spiky tail skin though.

In front of the carapace top vents you can see i've added greenstuff stream lining. The trygon features these, so thought it would be a cool addition, to show its baby trygon image.

Base has had the top cut off and the false bottom fitted. This will be filled with water effects, so its partly submerged, or entering/leaving the water.

Heres the pics.

Ok i've started painting it so rather then start a new thread, i've moved this to painting.

Last night i had some fun with my airbrush, i decided to try blending and shading the skin with the airbrush. I used a black undercoat and 3 shades of red.

Next up i started painting the red highlights on manually by brush, this was so fast with my smooth airbrushed base coat. You can see the red is brighter in the 2nd pic.

Next up manual shading to add depth, then blacking in.

Aaaah so it's SO big! It didn't look this way on the pics of the painted thing. Now you deserve even more respect IMHO. Kudos!
