I was wondering what people here use when they are painting black on a mini. It's always kinda been one of the hardest colors to paint for me, and I usually avoid it and use other colors.
When I look at other people's minis, some "Black" areas aren't even black at all. Some are dark Grey, and some are run-of-the-mill black. I was wondering what people here use for their black and highlights etc.
Hi!
When I'm painting black I mostly use Light Sea Grey from Vallejo (MC 108) for highlighting.
In fact i do not use any shading, just highlight black areas.
How does it look like, You may see here
welcome to the chest!
You got great solution of painting black in post above: when I have to paint blac I also fry not to highlight it too much, cause a tiny drop of white too much makes black looking grey
Wowie, thanks. Would the same colors work for highlighting sharp angles like a squarish gun? For that would brighten up the highlights a tad, or leave it the same?

practice it... and show us the pics!
I built up my highlighting with just adding Codex Grey to Chaos Black and then glazing it with black ink mixed with blue ink... (very watered down ofcourse!)

Cool, though I've never liked codex gray at all. Vallejo is the flippin Grey paint master. As for why I don't like codex gray, not sure. Maybe its all the bad paint jobs I have seen done with it. I'll try out the glaze too.
Hello all, my first post. I was just about to start a similar thread. I am starting a Raven Guard army and am having some serious difficultly with the black armour.
@alvarezwawa, do you only use one highlight? Or is it built up?
I think black armour looks best with very subtle highlights, like the ones on your Empire model(great job by the way).
I will pick up that Vallego color and give it a go.
Look for my painting logs and showcases coming soon to a screen near you.
