Khador vs Legion of Everblight

Post by ToMaZ »

I played another batlle yesterday. My first battle agains Legion.

I fielded:

Vlad
Berserker
Kodiak
Doomreavers
Widowmakers
Greylords
Kell Bailoch

My opponents army:

Vayl
Carnivean
Seraph
3x shredder
harrier
Striders
The forsaken
Goblins smoke crew.

We rolled for deployment, I won the roll and let him go first. I had heard some bad things about the legion so I was a bit cautious. He set up his army in the center. Vayl, flanked by the carni, the seraph to the left of the carni. Smoke goblins somewhere in between the seraph and carni. Forsaken behind vayl. 3 shredders and the harrier a bit more to her right

I deployed my greylords and kell on my right flank. Vlad in the center berserker slightly to the left of vlad, kodiak slightly to the right.

Advance deployment: Striders are placed in front of my Greylords and Kell. My widowmakers are close to the center of my left flank, the doomreavers were placed behind Vlad (on second thought I should have placed them to oppose those striders)

TURN 1

My opponent started with the striders. They moved so that the greylords were in range. 3 could shoot and 2 greylords fell to their arrows. First dice I rolled this game were for a panic test, the remaining greylords crapped his pants but stayed put. Then he moved his goblins and places a 5" cloud effect close to the center of the board in between houses and terrain. Blocking LOS to most of his army. The Seraph advanced a bit.
Vayl casts scary and crazy incite on the allready crazy carnivean (gving the carny+2 on damage and attack rolls when targetting model within 8"of her) She advanced a bit. Carni stayed close to her.
The shredders ran forwards, and the harrier flew into cover.

I kept all focus on Vlad, ran my kodiak forward, and free charged the striders with the berserker, ending my charge behind cover and about 6" away from the striders. Because of stealth I couldn't target those striders so I moved Kell into cover behind the berserker and the 1 remaining greylord went and hid in some trees.

The Doomreavers ran forward and the widowmakers advanced to take some shots at a shredder, causing 6 damage (I rolled for damage instead of the automatic 1p of damage)

Vlad casted blood of kings, moved close to the kodiak and then casted windwall.

TURN 2

My opponent targetted the berserker with his striders. I don't know why, but he forfeited his movement to get an aiming bonus, but with the berserker behind cover only 3 had a clear line of sight and could shoot. (If he had moved, he could have had LOS with all his striders and do a more powerfull combined ranged attack) So 3 striders did a combined ranged attack on the jack and did 4 damage.
The shredders advanced towards the center, one of them used their animus (+1 def and arm) on the harrier. The harrier then moved further into cover, making it nearly impossible to hit the stupid beast.

The center of the board stayed pretty much the same. Goblins advanced placed the 5" smoke, almost directly in the center now. Vayl advanced followed by her lapdog the carni. Seraph moved towards the striders. And the forsaken did nothing again.

Now I had enough of the cautious playing. Time for some pain  I activated Vlad, moved him forward , cast blood of kings and windwall. The kodiak advanced to block the chargelane of the shredders + harrier and used his vent steam (I forgot the harrier' s type of movement at that point)

Kell advanced to come within 5" of the striders and shot one nicely between the eyes (double six ) Mr Greylord had cleaned his pants in the woods and wanted revenge, he moved close to the striders and targetted 3 of them with frostbite, killing 2. The berserker charged the remaining striders, killing 2, leaving only the leader.

Doomreavers followed Vlad and placed themself nicely in the windwall. the widowmakers almost took out shredder nr 2 as the allready damaged shredder was out of range.

TURN 3

Here I found out how nasty the legion really is. I had everything under control. The unit striders was taking care off, I could easily advance up to his flank with the group that took care of them. Vlad had great defense and armour, No magic nor shooting on the doomreavers (windwall + doomreavers special rule) The Kodiak blocked a charge lane and LOS (but that's useless against legion) and if anyone wanted to charge the kodiak, he would be kooked in the vent steam. See everything is under control....

.... and then came the harrier....

It flew over my unit of doormreavers + vlad, landed close to one doomreaver. (no free strikes)
Note that at this points I had no clue what was going on and why my opponent had this strange grin on his face.

Vayl moved within 8" of that harrier. Then she casts hoarfrost on it and killed 5 of my six doomreavers + it made my kodiak stationary. There went my carefully though out battleplan straight out of the window. A 100 points unit as good as gone, a 117 points jack useless the next turn and that harrier still lives...

Shredders charged the kodiak, but took more damage due to vent steam then they dished out. Shredder nr 1 and 2 were near death and 3 was badly mangled. Important to note was that the shredders were maxed out on fury and Vayl had 2 fury.

Carni followed vayl again and stood right next to her. The seraph moved to threathen the berserker, kell and the greylord the next turn.
The gobbers threw another smoke template blocking LOS again to that group in the center.

I was badly hurt, one of my jacks was useless this turn, and my bashing unit was gone. Damnit....
I had one chance though. I gave one focus to the berserker.
The greylord took care of the last remaining strider. Kell forfeited his movement to gain 2 shots instead of one and he shot down both gobbers. Now the berserker had a clear lane towards the carni. So I slammed the beast. Knocking it onto Vayl, giving her collateral damage and knocking both vayl and the carni down. Vayl transferred damage to the seraph as the near death shredders were maxed out on fury and couldn't be transferred to (and so she can't reave that fury because they aren't going to die this turn either )

The now knocked down vayl was an easy target for the widowmaker. I got a clean shot with three, but managed to roll snake eyes for one of them. Anyway, vayl was forced to transfer the damage to the seraph again and now she was hurt and out of fury.

I activated Vlad, and used blood of kings. As I couldn't charge I because of that cloud, I needed blood of kings to get to Vayl. I walked over, and one attack was enough. I smacked her goooooood :D:D:D

Thoughts on this battle: Legion is difficult to play against. So may special rules and powerfull spells to remember. Units that hit pretty hard but die easily if they get hit. This was my friends 10th battle with the legion and he allready gave me a hard time.If he had just played more agressively with that seraph. Engaging my berserker, and denying me to come closer.

A fun batlle :)

congrats man! looks like that was close
I wonder if there's any chance I could hire these smoke goblins - I'd really love to include 5" wide cloud every turn to my army
