i just wondered how the folks in here painted their leather items, is there a hard and fast rule, or do you have to use certain colours.
thank you

RE: painting leather
It depends on what kind of leather colour you want offcourse but most of the time I just use Snakebite leather as a basecoat with some highlights on the edges. This is mostly for straps and belts. I also saw painters do them like this: black undercoat and just a very subtle highlight on the egdes and then a coat of gloss varnish. It's easy but I do not really like the effect it gives. (too shiny...)

RE: painting leather
I usually start out with a basecoat of vallejo model color's Cadmium Maroon, and then highlight with red leather, which gives a warm, realistic look like the leather parts on this one:

RE: painting leather
my usual way of painting leather is:
Snakebite Leather highlighted (sometimes even roughly, by drybrushing) up to Bleached Bone.
Sometimes the transition goes from Scorched Brown, through Snakebite Leather to Bleached Bone.
And then I wash it or glaze it with a mix of Flash Wash + Vallejo Smoke.
The effect is lik this vest:

Belts – usually bestial brown than was with black and weary delicate highlight with bestial, now also using valejo black red mixed with black – washed and than highlighted with these mixture + more black red and than snakebite leather.
Gloves – mix of black red and snake highlighted to snakebite and than for better effect sometimes shining varnish.
