need paint removal help

Post by LadyEyes »

I don't know if anyone here can help me, but I thought I'd ask.

I have a doll that a friend brought me to get some paint off. The doll has "fairy wings" made from a fine, mesh material (soft, very pliable) that has gold edging painted on it.

The trouble is there are a few spots of white and green paint on the wings from when her little girl's room was painted recently.

I'm a little afraid to try many chemical paint removers since the wings are of a delicate material. She tried soap and water, but it didn't help at all. (It didn't make it worse, so that is good. :) )

I believe (but am not certain) that it is acrylic wall paint. But it seems fairly thick and almost rubbery to the touch.

Any ideas? (short of cutting the wings off?)

Maybe gently scrape it off with a hobby knife? It will probably damage then but it's the only thing I can come up with right now...

agree: any "hard" chemistry may destroy the wings or change their color...

I'm going to try gently scraping it with a very sharp, new blade tonight. Wish me luck.

Do you have access to dry cleaning fluid (C-CL4 or C-H-CL3), might work; but I am worried if water made it worse. If water dissolved even a little of the paint then it somewhat or completely water soluble. It could be a mix or organic (lipophilic) and water soluble (hydrophilic) elements.
GOOD LUCK.
