Re: Julgrodan's workbench (update march 8)

Post by Julgrodan »

Argh, as I'm posting this I realize I forgot to take new pictures of the beastlord. He now has brown hair which suits him much better...

Anyhow!

Having some issues with lamps so the first picture is a little more yellow than the big guy is in real life. Decided to go for a muted paintscheme with a lot of yellow tones and not as much green as you usually see on nurgle stuff and instead going with blues and purples. The skin is bleached bone as a base with slightly blue toned shadows which gives is a hint of green. The open sores and guts are still being worked on but will have a purple/red tone to look sickly and make the yellows pop more. The armour is an experiment that I'm rather pleased with. I was going for a more organic sickly bone or ivory look which I think worked out nicely though I may need to push the shadows more to give it a sharper contrast against the skin. The cloth and chainmail have just been given their basecoats to give me a feel for the whole model. I'm trying to keep the colours rather muted so they don't look to strong and healthy. The leg armour is just brown so far, need to do the stripes to finish it. Not sure what to do with the arm-guard yet. The axe will probably get strong rust with oranges and blues. Comments and critique so far are very welcome!

This mini I painted right after the beastlord so my focus was on contrast between light and dark. The blending is rough in places but I think I'm getting better at putting the highlights at the right spots. Went with quite "army-style" colours with strong green and red as the main focus. The gloves need more work, and so do the arms. The revolver looks crap in the picture but very nice in real life, it's rather worn looking with some nice shine effects in blue and orange.
Comments and critique as always very welcome!

ok lets start from Esher :)
good : - green no longer flat , end somthing intresting is abot skin
red - similar to green but red is over all hard color to master (a lot due to paint quality wich with some goodexepcions are rater poor if it comes to red color)
the material betwen legs looks good end clean - grey parts end black reqire a lot of work - but black is hard eny way end grey - well thats somthiln like using only White end black paint to get well shaded grey end actualy get gray nor shaded black nor white - :)
thats tricky :P

Nurgle :
skin looks cool - add more "facture" to it some thiny vains some blu brusers end will be cool
shoulder pad - well thats look like somthing teaken from old end dirty toilet ...
mic green with yellow end mute thecolor on thous "horns" so effect will be ivem more "decayed"

dont be afraid with litle freehands like scars , crackels , vains ens so on - especialy on this model :)

Thanks maru! Skin has some spots with veins showing. WIll work on it some more for sure.

Sooo... some more progress. Cloth, chainmail and armour got a workover. Axe is not done but I'm quite pleased with it so far. I'm not sure about the wristguard. The verdigris is just to strong and doesn't fit with anything else.

I'm going to try to increase the difference between the light and dark parts and tone down the yellows. They are not as strong as the photos would suggest but they are a little to strong compared to the others.

I'm still not sure about the helm. I have so many ideas I don't know which one to try first. So far my ideas are:

1: Black oily metal with strong orange bits of rust for contrast, especially around the nurgle symbol.

2: Almost Pure white with orange/red nurgle symbol and streaks of grime running from the symbol.

3. Dark green but striped like the white armour to add texture.

4. Same technique I've used on the armguard but with glowing dark orange eyes.

good work, I like the striping on the armor. Overall it looks a bit too "pastel" for my taste. You basecoats are quite light which makes it difficult to put good contrast in the mini. But overall this is very good!

Thanks for the comments, always helpful to get the opinions of other's. Been to tired and poorly to paint all that much but back with the brush this evening I managed this.
Decided to try the rusted white bucket, thanks for the suggestion!

Still need to work on the horns, wristguard and axe shaft for sure. Not sure on the horns yet, either they'll go from green to yellow or they'll go from green to black to have some darkness thrown in with all the pale colours.

Will probably work some more on deepening the shadows too :d

As always, comments and critique appreciated!

Think he's about as good as he'll get now. Need to work some on his hands and the axe but other than that I think I'll move on to his base now.

Comments and critique very welcome, I've made good use of the comments I've received so far!

Wow! I'm very impressed. You really made a huge jump quality wise when I compare this to the pictures on the first page. Overall I think is a really strong paintjob. Skin, armour, spikes: very well executed!

Only two minor points:

The axe... but I just read you need some more work on that :) Make it look as interesting as the skin...

The head. Personally I always try to get as much focus on a head as possible. In general I paint stronger highlights on there than the rest of the skin for example. Bit with your model I don't think it's the focus point. It's white and gets lost in the rest of the model, which is also quite light. I don't know which color would have worked... maybe something very dark or metallic, like the axe.

I hope you understand my comment, but at the same time you should be very proud about this paintjob.

What about the base?
