First post here, but don't hold back. I love good critique!
Stuff that I've recently "finished". Think I may need more contrast in the colour transitions among other things... curious to hear what you all think.
Beastlord - nothing fancy, tried going for red/green and yellow/blue throughout the mini. Think it worked out ok but not great.
Necromancer - wanted to paint him up much brighter than the usual black on black. Sickly skin and rather warm but muted colours was the idea. Tried some OSL for the green skull in his hand.
Last but not least, some tyranids from Epic40k. I love to paint tiny tiny things the most and you don't get much smaller than 6mm scale usually
The beastlord is a bit too colorful in my opinion. Red, pink, yellow, green ,it's a bit too much for one figure. The blending on the skin and green cloth is superb. Metallics could use some more depth though.
In general I like what I see; You have a very clean style of painting.
As a final comment I'd like to add that your bases definitely need a lot more love
Thanks for the comments! I probably should have mentioned all the bases are just basecoated, I tend to leave that for last and these ones are just drybrushed so far!
He's colourful indeed. I may have gone a little overboard but I really wanted to get some good contrasts and colours. I think I pulled the individual colours off nicely but you have a point that they may not work that well as a whole. The chainmail is just greys so far, I wanted to experiment and mix "cheap NMM" on the chainmail with actual metallics for the weapon and gutplate. They've got more contrast than comes across in the picture but you're right they need more love and depth.
that's some clean and neat painting I see here
I can only suggest being more brave with contrasts and darklining to create more dramatic, 3D effect.
By the way - are you painting for gaming or showcase purposes?
As Nameless said, the question is what is your goal with these, mainly gaming pieces or are you trying to achieve showcase quality?
I too think that some more contrast and depth here and there would be better, but I myself don't always manage to find the right balance either The metallics I would definitely shade more. You could also try playing with different color glazes on them.
colors : https://mudcu.be/sphere/#
thatys nice applet will let you know what combinacions are "complementary" . wicha are "clash", "Tiadic" end so on
but Red + green - well you mey not be more contrasting in this maner - thats complementary clors wich mean they are totaly oposite (if you mix them you get black - ifthey are "perfect colors" but that wil be black not like in case of blue end red when you get purple )
so contrastit laks is not in colors but in light / shadow transicions
- you alrdy propably c on forum a Grey scale photos end comments about how to improve painting looking at thous grey scale photos or iven a axorcize that is all about usage only black end white paint to paint whole 1 mini - this is 1 you need
Thank you, I'll look into those things for sure. I suppose what I'm aiming for is showcase. I have a hard time not painting things as well as I can. But I also need to stop tweaking things and move on with what I've learned. I have some rather grandiose ideas that I'm hoping to start working on
Nice minis, especially the necro catches the eye as the colors are a bit clashing but not too much so it's still not disturbing. Necros on the other side should stay a bit dark and grim.
Beast lord is less sophisticated, yellow hair is a bit out of context, since you allready have bright accents on the green. More shading will do him good, as well for the tyranidfs, they need shading too.
