I am back!! - spellsinger and butterfly woman. :)

Post by Ana »

HI again after a long break. I am sorry I didn't visit this site for some time, but I was moving and it was a pretty hard time. I painted a little in the meantime, so with these two works I would inaugurate my comeback to the forum. :D

On both works I wanted to try painting reflections of colored light. On the elf I had some complications, because I wanted the light to be subtle and delicate, but it was difficult for me with the source position ed above her. So it was too difficult challenge for me, and I feel defeated in this case. Maybe you can give me some advice for future?

And the butterfly woman? I liked this modef from Fenryll very much. It's a good picture of the undecided feeling I get while looking at butterflies. On one hand they are beautiful, on the other hand - when I looked at them closely in a jar, I was repulsed by their insect ugliness.
So I painted this grotesque (supposed to be) beauty trying to mix my imagination with reality.

Maybe she would look better as a moth?

The Spellsinger's base looks very nice but I'm not 'convinced' of the blue source lighting... On some places it looks a bit off and especially on her face the effect does the paintjob more bad than good Imho. (to me it looks like she has a dirty face more than anything else... sorry!)

The Butterfly mini is great, very lovely wings!:D

hah, Skrit - your opinion was pretty close to what I wrote in the Polish part of the forum.
I also think the light isn't all this good. I think what caused the problem was the fact she wanted to achieve a subtle effect, while subtle effects aren't all this easy to achieve... :P
Maybe going for stronger and more colored light would be easier for the first attempt? There are parts where it looks OK (eg, the top of the staff, while the lower part (under the hand) is weaker, as the light should be more subtle there (and harder to achieve a decent effect because of this). The part around her eye should bve either colred by the light or covered in shadow, because leaving the natural color doesn't look realistic enough... that's something I can say now, after staring at the mini many times ;)

I think the color wasn't the most fortunate choice too.
And generally the shading is not deep enough for my taste. IMO with such sa strong light (which colors the surfaces) the surfaces covered in shadows should be darker (eg. the bottom of the breasts).

What I like is the base, and I admit I like it a lot.

I can only add the casting was pretty poor and her face was very rough... I also thought the model as such looks better in reallife, that it's more 3D, but it's pretty flat :(

As for the butterfly woman: It's one for the "am I male or female?" faces. Good thing she didn't try to make her a beauty ;)
I like the wings :)

Great minds think alike!:P

Seriously... The colour could do but the shades/light are the same strength as the object shedding the light! (makes sense?) Also the reach of the light might be too far. The blueish glow on her own body should be lighter and much more subtle.

It's not an easy technique I admit and everybody knows Ana is a great painter, so just to make it clear once more it's nothing personal but constructive criticism.:)

and isn't constructive criticism the reason for talking here? :)

i think you're right - to make the light reach this far, the onjects next to the source would have to be lit with really strong light (so: brighter and more colored)

hym a butter flay woman - great as alvays but light efect on the WE looks like war paints not like light - errors - not one palticular but a some that give strenge efect - ther is no radius of light - closer = brighter/ farer - less enlighted end afectet by light , secend (alredy menchioned) if light isso strong so shadows should be sharper - moustly on brests , tiara
another error as i think is wrong definition of color of the light - blue libht is just blue blue /white but almoust never dark blue - dark blue is only when light sorce is blue either end ther is nothing like white sorce of lioghts (like blue leflectors with special foto filters - thats separates a white light )
end itf this thing on the base is a light - shadows should be sharp as rasors, end torso of the mini will be in much brighter light - especialy face from the light side - end darker from the half that is on the other side ..

thats from me - whay you chouse a blue light it is one of the hardests :P - tray grean - it is so cooperative collors - iven more then red light

end abouy yhe base - just great

again i dont discaver nothing new but i hoopes thast will help some how
