Techmarine

Post by KingUlrikFlamebeard »

Yep new project, this time for a contest. I have entries into the Fantasy model part but none for Sci-fi, so this guy was lying about.

Now I have to applogize, the colours in the pics are not how they look on the model - well not quite. It's close but I'll try to improve them for next time. Sorry about this.

The idea I had was to give him a completely different look to any other marine of the chapter, and the deep red just makes him stand out among the blue of the other marines. The idea was to keep the armour dark but this time I used a different way of highlighting, this being highlighting it so the light is coming from above and not my usual 'any raised edges' way. ^^ It seems to have worked but the changes are subtle - if people didn't know I prefer subtle changes than to dead straight bright highlights - and are hard/almost impossible to see. :( The red is Chaos Black/Scab Red and adding more Scab red it slowly gained red gore and then finally as my highlights with blood red. A touch of blazing and firey orange was added to the very edges of the armoured plates that had previously been highlighted.

The flesh I want to have a pale complexion especially around the metal plate/wiring. The skin was tanned and bronzed flesh basecoat and shaded with flesh wash. Dwarf flesh was then added to the basecoat before moving onto elf flesh and highlights with bleached bone and finally skull white. The lighter colours are near the implants.

So far IMO it's looking good, not painted a marine for a while. The only problems atm are my photography skills :( and the fact I can't do eyes very well. But minor things.

C&C welcome.

Next steps...

The silver was based with a boltgun metal and chaos black mix and then highlighted up with more boltgun then chainmail and finally a touch of mithril silver. The upper most places (keeping with previous highlights on the model) has a touch of skull white added to the mix and highlighted.

The cloth between his legs (hard to see) is midnight blue, regal blue then enchanted blue highlights followed by extreme highlights with a bit of ice blue mixed in. The wire ends are tin bitz, brazen brass, beaten copper and finally dwarf bronze. Highlights were added with a touch of mithril silver for the light catching them. And finally the wires are kept to a simple - red, blue and yellow. These were done as follows -

Red - Red Gore, Blood Red, Firey Orange
Blue - Regal Blue, Enchanted Blue, Ice Blue
Yellow - Golden Yellow, Sunburst Yellow, Bad Moon Yellow, Skull white.

Well that's all for now, more tomorrow hopefully. I reckon he's shaping up well, what do you all think?

If I judge from the pic, I think the red needs more shading or even more highlights. But I don't know for sure. The pic could have flattened the red out.
The rest is all looking good.

keep it up

The marine himself is completed, that leaves his backpack and its various arms and finally its base. Once again the pics are of an ok quality only, much of the colour is washed out or just don't look correct (the blue tabard for one - it does have highlights, I think it's the positioning). I think red is a hard colour to get showing correctly here, it's a lot darker/deeper IRL and the model looks better as a whole. But anyways..

The shoulderpads and purity seals were done the same way; bronzed flesh base then washed with flesh wash. I then proceeded to layer from bronzed flesh once more and continously added bleached bone with each new layer before getting to pure bleached bone. The highlight is a bit of skull white added to bleached bone. Text with chaos black was then painted onto the purity seals, the seal itself is dark angels green base and then mixed with snot green for the next layer. Goblin green was added for the later two before pure goblin green for the highlights - again this was the method used for the scope sight on the bolter.

The Adeptus Machanicus symbol was first painted completely black and then the white was layered straight on top. A touch of codex grey added to black made for the slight highlights each have. The bolter was highlighted with codex grey and then a touch of fortress, an attempt at blending (slightly) on the top of the scope to show the direct light ontop came out.. well ok I suppose. It works anyways, light does seem to be touching there more but I need practice with blending.

Other than that, there was only a few touch ups and tidying of places to complete. Tomorrow work on the harrness itself begins, I hope to have him completed and based by next Sunday.

The metallics look very good, I think the best you've done so far! From what I can tell is that ToMaZ is right, the reds need more work in the form of shades and highlights.

Hmm.. that seems to be the opposite I have had in replys from others. They like the red and the metals are too bright. ^^ The red I can explain, the pic is bad. I have attempted to show light on the armour from dead above and so it misses much of the armour but catches some more; the shoulders are a fair bit lighter than the rest of the armour. But overall I wanted to keep the dark armoured look I was searching for - I hope to be able to get pics that show highlights and shading at some point but I'm afraid they'll have to wait.

Thanks for the feedback.

yeah, I also like these metallics a lot. If I was to change anything I'd pick the edges on the red parts a bit more.

I think the metallics aren't too bright! These guys take good care of their equipment. The pics could hurt the red indeed as I've heard before that this is a hard colour to photograph properly.

New version, updated.

The backpack was done the same as the armour, the reds being mixed and layered from chaos black and scab red through red gore and onto blood red with a highlight of blazing orange. The metals and copper looking metals were done the same too. Rather simple it is now.

The first arm I wanted to give a well used look too, so there's patches of bright and darker reds - I was aiming to make it seem like some paint had worn thin in places. There's also little bits of silver showing, where the paint has flaked off - this was done chaos black and then boltgun metal. The red on the arm was wahed with a brown ink to dull it and to make it seem at use. The metals were done the same as usual, as was the tubing.
