The Necromunda Project

The Necromunda Project
This section has been reserved so that I can add a screenshot of each gang as I complete them (Saves searching through multiple pages looking for a specific model/gang).

The Plan

Some of you may remember me posting a similar thread in the Brainstorm forum several weeks back.

I've been toying with the idea of beginning a long term project for a while now. I used to be a big fan of Necromunda before I stopped playing, and always wanted to paint one of each gang. I love the old minis and different themed gangs and so thought why not? I still have a few minis from my playing days that I recently stripped, and I have been able to find some cheap gangs in a local second hand shop which have also been stripped.

As some of you may know, Necromunda is a pretty old game now, and whilst the core boxed gangs are still available from Games Workshop, a lot of the additional miniatures (Special Characters, Heavies, hired guns etc) are now out of production and very rare and expensive to buy. There are also a lot of special characters that were included in the rule books, but never released as miniatures.

My goal is to attempt to paint one of each gang, I would also like to attempt to convert a few miniatures to fill the roles of the now OOP and unreleased miniatures, such as the Bull Gorg and Ash Waste Nomads. Here is my list of Goals:

Core Gangs
House Van Saar
House Goliath
House Cawdor
House Orlock
House Eschar
House Delaque

Special/Outlander Gangs
Ratskin Renegades
Scavvies
Redemptionists
Pit Slaves
Spyrers
Enforcers
Ash Waste Nomads (Converted)

Special Characters
Bull Gorg (Conversion)
Spyrer Matriarch (Conversion)
Spyrer Patriarch (Conversion)
Mad Donna Ulanti
Kal Jericho and Scabbs
The Arch Zealot
Bonnie Anderson (Conversion ....not only is it rare and excessively priced, but its one of the worst minis I have seen)
Brakar the Avenger
Dark Healer (Conversion)
Drak the Hunter (Conversion)
Lothar Hex (Conversion)
Judge Malkavoy (Conversion)
Karloth Valois
Klovis the Redeemer and Malakev
The Caller

Obviously thats a lot of miniatures, so this is going to be a slow ongoing project as and when I can afford the miniatures.

The Beginning

I'm was quite lucky to have some old miniatures stored away in the loft, I also found a job lot in a local charity shop. After stripping the paint I now have a good starting point to begin work. I'm currently in possession of:

14 man Van Saar gang
10 (wo)man Eschar gang
9 man Cawdor gang
8 Man Scavvy gang
2 Spyrers

I dont have much done yet, yesterday I undercoated my Scavvies. Scavvies are probabally the only gang I dont plan to convert, or to paint beyond the basic 8 man starter box. I dont dislike the gang as such, but they are certainly my least favourite, hense the reason for painting them first (Good practice models lol)

The display base in the picture is a bit of an experiment and is very much a WIP, I'm not sure how its going to turn out, but if the end result looks good, then I may consider doing them for each gang, and putting a lot more time and effort into them.

I hope to have the scavvies well on their way to completion by the end of the week.

very ambitious project and I hope you don't get discouraged in the meantime...

...but the display base would be big enough for 1.5 - 2 gangs, not only this one...
now it looks empty and oversized.

I agree, but it was the only spare picture frame we had lying around and I was doing it more as an experiment than anything.

However I actually have plans for a barbed wire fence running behind the gang (You cant see them in the picture, but there are little holes drilled where the fence posts will be slotted. I'm also considering adding a few debris style barricades at the front (One of the reasons I stopped painting it halfway through lol) Which could maybe help fill it out a little?

Just a small update, I should be able to get some serious painting done at the weekend.

I'm about halfway done with the Scallies skin, I still have a little more shading left to do, as well as the highlights. I'm unsure what color I should paint the scales, I think I'm just going to keep them a slightly darker shade of green than the skin.

The zombies are a bit of an experiment, I've never done undead flesh before and I'm not too sure the best way to go about it. I'm aiming for a very pale, almost white skin tone. I'll keep working on the skin and see what it turns out like, does anyone have any tips or advice on achieving a good looking undead flesh tone?

I'm sorry the photos were taken at night, and the lighting conditions were less than ideal.

the zombies look fine. the big guy (scaly?) needs some highlighting - but most likely it's an very early WIP, isn't it?

Looking nice and clean so far. There's some good contrast from the shading as well.
