[Commission] Khorne Berzerekers with FW parts

Post by Sigur »

Hi there, this will only be a tiny log about how I paint this squad of 10 of Chaos-god Khornes crimson cronies. These are mainly based on regular SM parts with the FW upgrade pack for Khorne Berzerkers:

They're very WIP at this point, all that is done so far is the red armour really and even that seems to need some final highlights. I got these basecoated, hence the other spots of colour here and there beyond the red.

Comments, critique, questions and hints are welcome as always. :)

Don't you want to add some stronger shading on the red armor? like bolder blacklining? It would define the shapes of armour plates better and still look good if you painted it with thin lines.

@Mahon: Thanks for commenting and your suggestion. Yes, the armour lacked definition but instead of blacklining (boooring ;) ) I tried to give it some more definition by adding final highlights. The idea was not only to have the armour plates more well-defined but also to tone down the orange highlights by using a fleshy colour for finishing highlights. That's a little trick I tend to do on red armour.

Update!

Red parts were a bit more defined with finishing highlights, eyes were painted, metallics were basecoloured and washed (probably need another wash though), backpacks have been painted to 50%.

Bloggery stuff!
What an annoying day. Emotional imbalance stopped me from painting more. I totally could have finished these guys this weeked but nooo...

Anyhow, C&C welcome as always. It's great to get feedback. Do you think that the armour looks good enough now?

They look good, but for me theres two things that you can improve.

- after the blending you almost lost the higlights
- the golden/metal parts are too bright in the photo, and i think thats the reason they seem in the need for deeper shadows and lighter highlights.

Thanks for the suggestions. The golden parts were very bright in real life as well, I gave them another wash today, they're more well-shaded and look more worn now. On the red I won't do much more for now, I'm pretty pleased with it.

By the way, I'm setting up a blog at the moment over at https://sigur.tabletopgeeks.com/. I will document and discuss my painting adventures there. Would be great if you could give me any suggestions on what you'd like to see in such a blog, leave some comments and so on. :)

Heya, update:

(close-ups for model collector)

The World Eaters are finished so far. Just not too sure about the blood on the swords. I'm really not used to paint blood, I don't think it looks good unless it's done really, really well, it doesn't fit with how I like Chaos Space Marines or Space Marines to look like and I hate messing up perfectly fine paintjobs (like on the chainsword casings) after they're finished. The client asked for a "little" blood on the weapons. Ha-ha. What do you think happens when you swing a chainsaw at someone? Right, you get LOTS of blood ALL over the chainsaw. Anyhow, I hope it looks alright.

As for other stuff, I currently am trying to wrap up the current commissions, so...

...oh right, my internet connection is jerking around the past few days and it's AMAZINGLY annoying. It usually goes all well but sometimes, it just won't work for five minutes. Really, really upsetting. So I have to just kill some time...hrm...oh hey, I changed a tire today. That was pretty manly. What else...I got a furniture beetle in my window frame. Threw some poison at it two days ago but I can still hear it munching my wooden window frame. Should be dead soon tough, otherwise I'll have to throw more poison at it. So, what have you been do...

Ah, the internet connection works again, so here:

I really understand why some people refuse to paint vehicles. It's pretty tedious. I like that red globe thing in the middle. Has a "attack its weak point for massive damage"-feel to it so I painted it in a red, glowy fashion.

What about Space Hulk, I hear you ask. Taking a break from it, but I will try to finish it soon to have that done. As for these DKoK testminis...argh. I fear those. I have yet to find the fun in painitng them, I have to figure out a proper way to paint them and I just hate the overally feel of uncertainty about them. It's a total break from how I usually paint, I mean I haven't painted "realistic-looking" miniatures in years

Anyway, enough of that bloggery. Hope you like the colourful pictures. :)

wow, lot of painting done.
I agree with Mahon, some simple darklining would define them better. It's a good looking unit nevertheless :)
