Long time no see… But not anymore!

I was really looking forward to write this post, yet so many things have been going on that I never managed to give it the attention and time it deserved. But now here it is, finally meeting you again and casting some more light on what we have been doing for the last months and what the whole thing with Mixed Dimensions is all about.

New projects…

New team-up: Mixed Dimensions

As some of you may already know, we got involved in a new and exciting project, in which technology meets art and our hobby. We were unable to tell much about it for some time, but now I can tell a bit more about the whole thing.

… in a new studio.

The partner we’ve teamed-up with is Mixed Dimensions, a company that combines 3d-printing technologies with painting and traditional modeling in order to create various kinds of collectibles. So while they provided the technological part, we brought the painting and modeling. 🙂

Test prints for the Bella project

Where did it take us? Oh, first of all we got to work with models in totally new sizes, like 7″ or even 12″ scale. Pretty impressive, I must say, even if they hardly compare to what we usually do.

It’s big, it’s heavy, and you surely don’t have enough space free in your collection. 😉

We’ve taken some of these models to some miniature painting and modeling events, and we still may carry them with us to show you, fellow hobbyists, painters and collectors, that figures can be more than just miniatures! 🙂

Our involvement with Mixed Dimensions allowed us to collaborate with as interesting partners and projects as DAZ 3D, Ubisoft or Cryptic Studios, and there’s still more interesting stuff to come, more that we finally may be sharing.

If you were following Kacpero’s or Ana’s instagram profiles, you may have noticed some works we’ve prepared in the meantime, but we may be finally revealing them here as well. Well, let’s see before we promise something we cannot fulfill…

Werewolf from Mixed Dimensions

Changes, changes, changes…

With the basic work with preparing the team for the new projects, training new artists and preparing for all the new subjects already mostly done, we could finally return to the community and take a look at the website.

We visited a few events and exhibitions, met some old friends and were happy to see that we still enjoyed that part of the miniatures hobby. We decided we will return to visiting and participating in various events, so let’s meet at some events! Don’t hesitate to come and say hi if we meet, the fun is so much better when shared!

Meeting at MosonShow. We want more! 🙂

We decided to close the forum, as announced in July. As sad as it was, we had to admit we wouldn’t have enough time to make it active enough to justify the amount of work required to keep it updated and maintained. So we re-activated this Chest of Colors facebook group for all of you, who still want to be a part of the community and chat with your fellow hobbyists the way we used to do in the forums. Yes, silly chatter is totally allowed there, as long as it is not (too) offensive for others. 😉

We still need to take proper care about our Facebook fanpage and our other profiles, but there’s only so much one can do, and we have more interesting things to do first.

Hunter bust from Mixed Dimensions

Cool things to come!

Now that we could finaly reveal the cooperation, we may officially do some cool things together, which is good, because our time for projects which are exclusively Chest of Colors related is more limited now that we need to take care of both them and those which are related to Mixed Dimensions.

You haven’t seen it. You haven’t! 😉

One small thing I can spill some beans about is that we may have a contest soon. We are still working on the formula, subject and rules, but one thing is sure – the prizes will be nothing short of cool. 🙂

So who can howl louder? Do you recognize the vampire? And the werewolf?

We will also be posting some more information about various interesting projects we have been working on in the „lost months”. And believe me, there’s much to talk about!

Painting service? Why not!

Having sorted out more urgent matters, which have been keeping us busy, allows us to offer our painting service some more attention again.

We have been noticing an increasing number of inquiries about availability for commissions and special projects, so we would like to make sure they can be answered and taken care of. We should be posting some pictures of our recent paintjobds soon, so please stay tuned.

Commission, result of collaboration with Mixed Dimensions and Daz 3D

I will also make a separate post about all the new options that we’ve prepared with our painting service in mind, but for now it’s just great to share that now we have access to a larger and more versatile team, that can handle really diverse projects – from miniatures to dioramas, from single high-quality models to huge armies, from 3d printing and modeling to painting. But please give us some time to tell you more. 🙂

You all probably know these guys, don’t you?

So, as you can see, we’re not gone, and happy to be finally allowed to show what we’ve been doing for the past months. Keep your fingers crossed for us and wish us luck, as there’s so much great stuff to come! 🙂

Darth Vader at a miniature contest

Ahoy,

another wonderful weekend in Bavaria with miniatures in background. This time 3. Fürstenfelder Modellbautage 2017 near Munich -http://www.fuerstenfelder-modellbautage.de

Apart from models, figures, traditional beer, precels and weißwürst there were lots of additional activities for children! Yes, this event concentrates not only on nerds but mostly on young hobby adepts. There were many attractions for them like:

And of course the show mit many plastic models and some miniatures.  There could have been more entries in the contest, but you had to pay 2€ for every miniature you enter …  Why limit the people who want to enter more? I always thought the more entries, the more everyone should be happy. Strange logic to me.

Although a small event me and my family had great time. You can see the organizers have concentrated themselves on attracting younger people with the hobby.

Duke of Bavaria / Herzog von Bayern 2017

Ahoy!

This year again I had a chance to  take part I one of the Germany’s most popular contest – Duke of Bavaria 2017 (or Herzog von Bayern 2017) in Ingolstadt.

There were very interesting workshops with Alfonso Giraldes (Banshee). I can only recommend to listen to his miniature painting philosophy 🙂

I feel this year there were less entries as in previous years, but  most of them were new. On the second hand I think there were more people then ever. Usually admiring the minis and buying lots of stuff.

Here are my favorites from the show:

3rd Festival of Miniatures Painting and Sculpture in Toruń

Eh, I am writing to pester those who didn’t make it to the festival. ;-P

Toruń charmed me as usually, and I hope the miniatures festival will become a tradition.

It’s a good place to chat freely, weather seems better than it really is, and time seems to flow in a crazy way. And before I realized, we were on the driveway, back from the trip, and Balrog asked „why was our stay in Torun so short? 5 days would be better”.

This year I didn’t manage to finish my entry, so to avoid going empty-handed I took a WIP with me:

Colleagues from the Exceptionally Lazy Modellers Club were very hospitable and they invited me to place my work in their non-contest cabinet. 😀 And I feel that it was the only one to stay true to the name of the club… There were like 30 FINIISHED works in the display cabinet – what a failure 😉

The competition entries have been presented in the internet, so I won’t repeat them here. Here are the ones I liked the most (in a pretty random order):

Kasia’s faun, beautifully composed. It was the only bust without the usual cleanly-cut edges, and the way it was blending into the wooden surrounding created unique ambience.

Mnie najbardziej przypadły do gustu (kolejność losowa):

Faun Kasi, pięknie skomponowany – było to jedyne popiersie które nie miało klasycznie oberżniętych krawędzi, a wtopienie go w drewniane otoczenie zbudowało niepowtarzalny klimat.

Certain Karol R. expected to win also this the contest. Fortunately for us, he wasn’t wrong ;-P and the awards ceremony passed in a friendly way. But seriously,  I liked Rudyk’s display, and let showcasing his works in my scrapbook serve as a proof.

Here Lan charges his batteries for the next year’s show. ;-D As you can see, prizes for the awarded artists were pretty plentiful.

Mr. Pencil was pretty amusing and didn’t disappoint even after closer examination. Accurate association drew attention to this piece. 🙂

I would be unable to see it all if it wasn’t for the Guardian Mahon.

There were a few interesting exhibitors, so my wallet suffered. I limited myself to purchasing only 2 bases and 10 paints from a brand that I had never tried before. I also received a glass dome for a model and a 000-sized synthetic paintbrush as a bonus from Loot Pile.

Of course we returned late, just for the night, so the luggage is still unpacked and I am playing with my new paints. The paints seem to be highly efficient, indeed.  Although they’re thin, they’re very well pigmented. One only needs to be careful when applying them – they flow easily, so it’s easy to overdo it in the first attempts.

Theoretically they should remain fresh on the palette for a long time thanks to their thinness. It would make me happy, as I am the kind of a painter who keeps mixing her paints all the time.

Farby rzeczywiście wydajne i choć rzadkie, to esensjonalne.

The brush runs well and is easy to control, but I would prefer to waith with my judgement until I use it a bit more, as I am used to the kind of bristles that natural brushes have, or maybe it’s a matter of the length of bristles? Oh my, I just picked a new 3/0 Raphael 8404 brush and the other one seems to be like its synthetic clone!

Which means the brush is simply stiffer. For me it runs more like a Winsor & Newton brush. I will use it while finishing the knight model, so I will be able to expand my judgement. And if you want to add anything on this subject, feel free to do so. 🙂 And here’s a sample of the synthetic brush and my new paints: Czyli to włosie jest sztywniejsze. Jeśli ktoś chce coś dodać, to śmiało 🙂
