yup it looks simple, but I think it's pretty hard to get the plasticard in the right form and angle and such.
Bolter and Chainsword has some nice tutorials for players and painters of space marines.

can't you put the plasticard in a cup of hot water to make it softer and then bend it into shape?

I think you can, I don't have that much experience with plasticard. You can use hot water to bend plastic horse legs en dragons into the right shape so I think it'll work fine with plasticard too.
